Focus Canning presents its latest optical developments at No.9 Optics.
Spearheaded by Head of Design Edward Koehler, No.9 Optics is the home of Focus Canning’s proprietary cine lens projects- a 40 year culmination of opto-mechanical refinement. Some of the lenses we have built so far were not used for almost 100 years. We do not see our work as lens ‘re-housing’ but ‘re-incarnation’ through pairing classic optics from bygone eras with youthful and reinvigorated bodies.
The most significant departures from modern day lens design are our unique focus movement and the forward placement of iris control. We believe any tool should be not only be reliable, but enjoyable to wield, inspiring a feeling of finesse. Quicker lens changes and no fighting to squeeze motors alongside each other. Our patented Tensegrity Coil focus movement results in a significantly improved close focus, enhancing creative freedom in the Cinematographers shot-making.
Our designs are conceived to accommodate almost any optical combination, enabling us to approach virtually any project. For this reason we have curated an exhaustive selection of timeless and forgotten glass that is oven-ready for our ‘re-incarnation’ process. This selection strikes a balance between very rare but trusted faithfuls, and some very left of field glass that we feel a responsibility to re-introduce to the world of cinematography.
